This chapter summarizes the discovery and development of high-voltage electrode materials based on fluorine-based polyanionic compounds. First, it provides a brief history of the role of fluorine in batteries, enlisting metal fluoride conversion reaction cathodes, nonaqueous electrolytes, and additives. Then, the chapter focuses on the syntheses, crystal structure, and electrochemical performance of the recently discovered fluorine-based high-voltage polyanionic cathode compounds. For the sake of clarity, the fluorophosphates group of compounds is described first, followed by the fluorosulfate group of compounds. Finally, the chapter presents perspectives linked to fluorine-based electrode materials in terms of future discoveries or applications, as perceived personally.
