In Section 3.1 the most important combustion calculations are discussed, such as oxygen and air requirement for complete combustion of various fuels using regular or oxygenated air, the quantity and composition of the combustion products, adiabatic flame temperature, heating values and laminar flame velocity. In Section 3.2 mathematical descriptions of the transport phenomena of heat, mass and momentum are presented as well as deriving their balances. In Section 3.3 global and elementary reactions are shown, as well as the reaction rates and the chemical equilibria. The formation of radicals and their characteristics are shortly elucidated and the development and analysis of a set of chemical reactions. In Section 3.4 the fundamentals of ignition processes are described. Ignition is the deliberate or unintentional start of any combustion reaction. One can distinguish between autoignition and induced ignition. Ignition of gaseous, liquid and solid fuel is discussed. Key terms are introduced. Controlling ignition in technical applications is likewise important as its prevention for safety reasons. Important terms and relationships that facilitate the understanding of combustion as a whole are introduced.
