Mythos and Logos in Schopenhauer

This brief paper deals with aspects of Schopenhauer’s philosophy regarding different facets of his concept of knowledge, in light of the contemporary distinction between mythos and logos . Schopenhauer’s philosophy of knowledge is here understood as plural, given that he admits the epistemically valid coexistence of different accounts of the world, such as philosophy and religion. The paper revisits selected passages of Schopenhauer’s texts with a view to arguing that this acceptance by the philosopher points to an epistemic pluralism on his part, which in turn suggests that the modern clear-cut distinction between the two Greek terms may not be found in Schopenhauer’s philosophy.
