摘要与影响
Strategic emerging industries are central to cultivating new quality productive forces, yet their high-quality development is constrained by persistent capital mismatches. Their inherent characteristics—high upfront R&D costs, long payback periods, and significant technological uncertainty—conflict with the short-term return mandates of traditional finance, creating acute financing constraints. We argue that patient capital, defined by long-term commitment, high risk tolerance, and active governance, offers a critical financial solution. Using a precisely constructed panel of China's listed strategic emerging enterprises from 2011 to 2024, identified via the latest official industrial classification, we empirically examine the impact of patient capital on their performance, measured by total factor productivity. Our baseline two-way fixed effects models, together with a series of robustness tests, consistently show that patient capital significantly enhances their performance. Mechanism analysis reveals that this positive effect operates through two distinct channels: it fosters technological innovation by increasing both R&D input and patent output, and it reduces operating costs through improving corporate governance and resource allocation. Moreover, we identify important boundary conditions: the effect is significantly amplified in regions with stronger intellectual property protection and is more pronounced for state-owned enterprises, highlighting the roles of institutional environment and ownership type. These findings provide robust evidence for national strategies aimed at cultivating patient capital and offer concrete policy implications for building a multi-layered, long-term oriented financial ecosystem to support innovation-driven industrial upgrading and the high-quality development of strategic emerging industries.
