Synergistic effect of in situ Al2O3 particles and Al-fiber-derived pores on mechanical properties of porous Fe–Cr–Ni composites

Porous Fe–Cr–Ni composites with in situ Al 2 O 3 particles were successfully synthesized using Al powder and fibers. The composite with Al fibers of aspect ratio 30:1 at a 40 wt% replacement of Al powder exhibited 48.4% porosity, a bending strength of 57.3 MPa, and a conditional fracture toughness of 75.5 MPa m 1/2 . Fiber-derived Al 2 O 3 particles and pores enhanced toughness by promoting crack deflection and plasticity.
