摘要与影响
Chapter 18 proposes a theoretic model that can explain both domain-general and domain-specific impulsive behavior, and discusses empirical studies that provide support for this model. It begins by discussing the relationship between self-control and character and provides some historical background on the domain-specific versus domain-general issue. The central part of the chapter presents some preliminary findings from a longitudinal investigation of domain-specific impulsive behavior. On this account, domain-specific impulsive behavior is a result of domain-specific temptation and, to a lesser extent, perceived harm. The findings reviewed in this chapter highlight the utility of a domain-specific approach in terms of improved prediction of life outcomes, understanding psychological processes, and targeted interventions.
