This paper presents the virtual synchronous (VSync) approach with adaptive inertia and damping control (AIDC) for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine (WT) connected with the grid to enhance the transient response. The proposed control strategy provides virtual inertia and damping regulation under transient conditions. The VSync method incorporates the swing equation of a synchronous generator (SG), facilitating the synchronization of the DFIG-WT without needing a phase-locked loop (PLL). A rotor flux-based modeling approach for the DFIG is developed to implement the control action. Reactive power is regulated through appropriate rotor flux magnitude control. Active power control is achieved by adjusting the angle of internal voltage generated by the VSync using the AIDC method. The reactive power reference is defined from the inverse Q−V droop to support the voltage regulation at the DFIG-WT terminal. However, the speed controller defines the active power reference, where the speed reference is defined by the wind turbine de-loading graph. The proposed method helps to enhance the rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) and improves the frequency nadir. A time domain analysis is performed to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed control among the vector control (VC), constant parameter control (CPC), and adaptive inertia control (AIC). Further, the controller hardwarein-loop (CHIL) is performed to validate the DFIG-WT response under transient conditions.
