A Mega-Ampere Pulsed Current Generator Using Synchronization of Field Distortion Spark Gap Switches

This article describes the efficient microsecond pulse power generator using the synchronization of field distortion spark gap (SG) switches. Four SG switches are synchronized using a fast single trigger generator (TG). The V-dot sensor is designed, calibrated, and implemented to measure the subnanosecond rise time trigger pulse. The load is short-circuited with seven coaxial cables to minimize the inductance and increase the current at each switch. The probability analysis has been carried out for four switches and that gave a maximum value of 89% of the self-breakdown voltage (SBV) to operate these switches. Experimental results suggest that the switches can be synchronized within 10 ns. The pulse power generator can deliver a maximum current of 0.76 MA with the quarter cycle periods of currents being$1.3~\mu \text{s}$at a charging voltage of 40 kV.
