Rediscovery of Ypthima albipuncta Lee, 1985 (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Satyrinae), with revision of its taxonomic status

Ypthima albipuncta Lee, 1985 is a little-known species originally described based on a holotype by monotypy from Yiliang, northeastern Yunnan Province, southwestern China, and has never been recorded since then. In the present paper, it has been rediscovered in Hupingshan National Nature Reserve, northern Hunan Province, central China, a place far from its type locality. Based on comparisons of wing patterns, male genitalia, and the morphology of androconial scales, Y. albipuncta is found to be conspecific with Y. microphthalma Forster, 1948. Therefore, we downgrade Y. albipuncta to a subspecies of Y. microphthalma, viz. Y. microphthalma albipuncta stat. nov., and describe the newly discovered population from Hunan as a new subspecies of Y. microphthalma, viz. Y. microphthalma wenhaoi subsp. nov.
