摘要与影响
Genome editing, and omics technologies hold immense potential to revolutionize pest management by offering novel approaches for developing resistant crops and controlling insects. CRISPR/Cas9 stands out as a widely utilized genome editing tool, instrumental in crafting various pest-resistant crops and insects. Omics technologies, encompassing proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics, enable the elucidation of gene and protein functions crucial for pest resistance. This wealth of information aids in identifying new targets for genome editing and formulating more efficient pest management strategies. Nevertheless, the practical application of genome editing and omics technologies in pest management encounters several hurdles for genetic engineering, including regulatory clearance, societal acceptance, and affordability. Despite these challenges, these technologies present unprecedented opportunities to devise sustainable and potent pest control methods. This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of the practical utilization of genome editing and omics in pest management, shedding light on both the potential benefits and the obstacles that must be overcome to ensure the sustainable management of pest populations.
