Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has made remarkable strides across numerous industries, and its impact on geotechnical engineering has just begun. This review critically examines the development of generative AI, along with a summary of its applications in geotechnical engineering. The high data demand and “black box” issue of generative AI that hinder the rapid development of generative AI in geotechnical engineering are also discussed. By exploring these issues, this paper aims to inspire future research efforts that address the barriers while leveraging the promising generative AI technologies in this discipline.
