摘要与影响
Avatars and digital identity are the main components of the metaverse. Both of these serve roles as individuals and their identities in the physical world. Avatars play as a virtual character to represent users, while digital identity is a form of identification of who they are in the virtual environments. This chapter explores the function of avatars and digital identity in representing and expressing the user in the metaverse. Through extensive customisation options, avatars allow users not only to reflect personal identity but also to express creativity and escape real-world limitations. However, factors such as monetisation and technical constraints restrict full self-representation. Besides, prior research shows that avatars could influence the user’s self-perception and behaviour, as illustrated by the Proteus Effect, where users’ behaviours align with the attributes of their avatars. Not only that, but it also supports positive outcomes, such as improved self-esteem and mental health, yet also poses risks including addiction, dissatisfaction, and psychological challenges. Moreover, avatars facilitate social identity and interaction which could not only foster community and a sense of belonging but also reinforce divisions within the metaverse. Looking forward, the future of the metaverse will likely extend on technological advancements, such as creating realistic avatars and greater motion tracking, and also enhance digital identity management and awareness as avatars are increasingly influencing social and economic dynamics.
