Dynamics of Successful Stepfamilies

Successful stepfamilies can be recognized by examining the degree to which they have responded to the challenges and tasks involved in the transition between previous family cultures and the stepfamily culture. The new couple relationship needs to be strengthened and solidified; the previously-existing parent/child bonds must be maintained or enhanced; new step relationships need to be developed; and a sense of membership in the new family unit must be attained. Also, to the extent possible, continued contact between the children and both biological parents is very helpful and a parenting coalition between the children's two households facilitates this continuing attachment.
