摘要与影响
Bank balance-sheet management is supported by increasingly sophisticated models for valuation, asset-liability management, capital, liquidity, interest-rate risk, and optimization. Yet these models generally begin with a particular decision problem and construct the state variables and constraints required for that problem. This paper addresses a logically prior question: how should the financial condition of a bank be represented so that different management decisions can operate on a common, economically coherent financial state? We develop Financial Representation, a dynamic framework that maps balance-sheet positions, market and customer conditions, and a coherent enterprise assumption structure into a Canonical Financial State. Risk Attribution provides economically interpretable coordinates that reconcile changes in Economic Value of Equity and Net Interest Income to their underlying financial drivers. Successive states form a financial-state trajectory reflecting both exogenous market and customer developments and endogenous management actions. The framework then introduces Reverse Optimization. Rather than beginning with a proposed balance-sheet transaction and determining its consequences, management begins with a target vector of Key Performance and Regulatory Indicators and identifies balance-sheet actions capable of moving the institution toward those targets. Governance is incorporated directly into the feasible action set, so candidate strategies are constrained by Board policies, regulatory requirements, risk appetite, capital, liquidity, and other institutional limits. These elements form a recursive closed-loop model of bank balance-sheet choice: represent the current financial state, identify governance-feasible actions toward target outcomes, observe the resulting state transition, and repeat. The framework provides a common theoretical foundation for studying financial-state dynamics, managerial behavior, balance-sheet optimization, governance, and intelligent decision systems.
