摘要与影响
Marking the 50th Anniversary of the now seminal conference, Microalloying’75 (MA-75) held in Washington D.C. on 1-3 October 1975, this interpretive summary paper was conceived to provide a general overview of the evolution in niobium usage and where we are in 2025, within the main application areas covering linepipe, automotive, structural and stainless steels. It is a collective piece of work, with contributions from a team of leading niobium experts each covering the main highlighted applications. It begins with a brief but concise historical metallurgical journey, illustrating the significance from the very first Charles Hatchett Award winner from 1979 through to our deeper understanding and quantifying the metallurgical factors relevant to the application of Nb in hot rolling processes and depth of process modeling we have today. The journey highlights how niobium’s robust metallurgical attributes, still continue to demonstrate the applicability and versatility of it being able to metallurgically contribute to addressing evolving steelmaking and rolling teclmologies/practices and end-user industry requirements. Subsequent sections examine in detail the use of niobium microalloying in a range of steel products according to a sectorial approach. These cover well known products such as HSLA, linepipe and structural steel, through to Nb in Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS). the effect of Nb in multiphase microstructures, its ability to precipitation hardening, control austenite grain size growth, increase hardenability, support grain boundary engineering etc. are all presented and discussed. Within all sections there remains a general understanding to the importance of structure-property relationships in niobium microalloyed steel, which fundamentally draws upon the vast body of works and learnings amassed over 50 years. The structural section in particular acknowledges the renewed, decades known, role of Nb in its potency in delaying the recrystallisation of austenite via solute drag and precipitation harden post rolling. Years later, this knowledge is proving useful in applying ultra-low amounts of Nb in conventional rolling for structural commodity grades to replace notable additions of other ferro-alloys thereby reducing overall alloy and processing costs, as well as reducing the carbon emissions footprint into these very high-volume global steel products. In closing, the paper draws attention towards sustainability, an area that is expected to drive demand for more efficient and low-emission steel products and end-products that utilize steel, necessitating the use of high-performance steels produced through clean and efficient processes. In this context, the authors anticipate that the application of niobium in steel production will continue to grow for many more decades to come.
