Chapter 25 ) is discussed from a position including the German idea of Bildung with its emphasis on issues that are beyond “functional” scientifi c literacy (Bybee, 1997). On the other hand, European ideas of Didaktik (Fischler, 2011; Westbury, Hopmann, & Riquarts, 2000) are used to analyze the particular role of designing the content structure of physics instruction in such a way that it meets students’ perspectives (e.g., pre-instructional conceptions and interests) and the aims of instruction.
