The rise of social media

This chapter examines how consumption and interaction of new media show how wider socio-political circumstances and ideological ‘race’ thinking fuel racisms. It focuses on the case of Amir Khan and examines how social media has been used to question his national identity, religion and genetic make-up. It argues that while the media maybe relatively new, many representations still hark back to the age of empire in terms of ‘race’ thinking.
