The integration of data literacy into education systems is essential for advancing evidence-based practices and harnessing the potential of digital transformation. This chapter explores the design, implementation, and evaluation of two distinct approaches to fostering Educational Data Literacy (EDL): an open online course and a face-to-face university course for pre-service teachers. Building on the Learn2Analyze Competence Framework, the online course offers scalable, self-paced learning while addressing the specific needs of the German educational context. Complementing this, the university course employs a hands-on, collaborative format, engaging learners with real-world data scenarios through a flipped classroom approach. Evaluation results reveal insights into learners’ motivations, engagement patterns, and learning outcomes. While the online course fosters scalable learning opportunities, the face-to-face course supports in-depth exploration and critical reflection, highlighting the complementary nature of these instructional designs. The discussion addresses theoretical implications, such as integrating EDL with emerging AI literacy frameworks, and practical pathways for systemic integration, from institutional teacher education to broader competency profiles. The chapter illustrates the potential of different instructional designs to promote EDL and advocates for innovative, scalable, and role-specific approaches to data-driven education.
