摘要与影响
The current digital transformation of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, has sparked scholarly debate regarding the migration of news services away from offline/print mediums. Digital platforms, once considered supplementary services, are now media outlets’ primary business model. Focusing on Indonesia as its primary case study, this chapter examines the state of digital journalism, including its theoretical discussions, practices, and critiques within academia and among media professionals. This chapter begins by exploring digital journalism as a new and emerging genre within the field, highlighting the decline of old bureaucratic editorial practices and the shift from a culture of strict control in media newsrooms to a focus on ensuring news quality. With 213 million Indonesians using the internet in 2023, creating a lucrative market for digital journalism, we delve deeper into the key characteristics of digital journalism and the primary factors fueling its rapid growth in Indonesia.
