Developing Cosmopolitan Dispositions through Character and Citizenship Education in Singapore

A core aspect of Singapore's identity is understood through the lens of cosmopolitanism. In this chapter, we begin by discussing three important features of Singapore's cosmopolitan character, namely from economic, cultural, and ethical perspectives. Together, these perspectives provide a macro understanding of the role of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) in Singapore, especially in developing cosmopolitan dispositions such as empathy and care for others. In the second part of this chapter, we highlight key changes to CCE in Singapore, focusing on the current curriculum and exploring both its opportunities and challenges to helping students develop ethical ways of being and living with others in a globally interconnected age.
