Fan and Gu's comment that our sham acupuncture control intervention is a form of acupressure or a mild form of active acupuncture and that the true effect of active acupuncture therefore may be underestimated. Evidence suggests that physiologic effects may be generated by this kind of control acupuncture (1). Two common sham acupuncture protocols are adopted in many acupuncture trials, namely, superficial and nonpenetrating acupuncture. In our trial, nonpenetrating acupuncture was used.
